In the Dominican Republic, many individuals living in precarious documentation situations face daily uncertainty and fear. One vital resource offering relief is the support from organizations like ASCALA, our partners in Consuelo, who help people gain or regain legal documentation. However, the recent cuts in U.S. foreign aid, which have affected Haiti, are also impacting these essential programs.
As a result, ASCALA’s documentation team has been significantly reduced, making it even harder for people to access the help they desperately need. We remain committed to supporting this critical program.
We met with ASCALA at the beginning of March to learn about how their programs have been affected by cuts, and what that means for the community. Legal documentation is not just a piece of paper—it can be lifesaving, especially as deportations to Haiti are on the rise. It ensures individuals can access vital services and offers some protection from deportation.
