“The resource we have during crisis is community, and what we can do together.” —Renaud Thomas, Haiti

Deep in the mountainous villages surrounding the city of St. Marc, Haitian families know there won’t be a quick fix for the political turmoil, expanding gang control or widespread food insecurity that besiege the nation’s capital, far from their homes. No doubt the crisis affects them, with limited flow of goods/people along key transportation routes, and real fears over safety and the future their children will inherit. But they refuse to be defined by crisis.

Jacqueline’s rural community knows that investing in their people is the only way to move forward. Through adult literacy classes and microcredit business loans & training she and her neighbours are preparing against future crises. Jacqueline is gaining skills that will help her earn a living and the confidence she needs to speak out about the need for change. Many literacy graduates actively reinvest their earnings to support additional education and business initiatives that will benefit everyone. She says:

“Reading and writing helps me have more knowledge to do commerce better. It is important for me to learn to read and write so that I can defend myself while I am in society.” –Jacqueline S., Haiti

Building Community

As our dear colleague Renaud reminded us during his recent visit to Canada, change in Haiti must come from within. And that is just what Jacqueline and her community are doing. They have the skills to take on bigger initiatives, but face unequal access to resources. In the neighbouring village of Grand Fond, for example, literacy graduates are organizing a project to bring clean drinking water to their village! Your support today lends strength to their vision for tomorrow.
